Moving Forward
The ODI ran compliance audit events with workshops that enabled people to share experiences
Following a compliance audit in 2007, the public bodies that took part in it were invited to attend a series of events run by the ODI to promote learning and enable sharing of good practice.
During the events experiences in beating challenges were shared and the following outcomes emerged.’
Top tips are:
Achieving senior level support
- Link disability equality schemes with other business structures such as risk management and strategic planning to achieve a higher profile and embed them across the organisation
- Create a spirit of competition and look at what other public bodies are doing within the sector to secure senior level support
Involving disabled people
- Continue to communicate with disabled people and organisations who are involved throughout the process so they know what is happening
- Be honest and realistic about what can be achieved and give disabled people a real chance to help shape action plans and priorities
Implementing schemes
- Link the implementation to other plans and governance procedures
- A change in culture is required to ensure full implementation and mainstream disability. Training is a good way to do this.
