Disability Equality Indicators

The Disability Equality Indicators measure progress towards disability equality

Introduction

The Disability Equality Indicators are a starting point in measuring progress towards disability equality.

The data on this page present the most accurate and up-to-date figures available to the ODI and are updated as new data is released throughout the year. Where significant changes or gaps are reported, they are considered to be statistically significant at the 95 per cent confidence level unless otherwise stated.

The main areas covered are

As part of our ongoing effort to improve the indicators selected to measure progress, we have expanded the indicators data to include additional indicators (poverty, crime, and independent living etc.) as well as expanding existing ones (mainly around employment and educational qualifications).

A number of the indicators presented are used to help monitor progress on the Independent Living Strategy (ILS) We recognise the critical importance of tracking progress on the ILS and work is actively ongoing to expand and improve the ILS indicators.

We are aware that the current set of indicators does not cover all areas that disabled people have told us are important to measure.

One reason for this is a lack of information available to measure some of the things that disabled people have told us are important. In order to fill these gaps, the ODI is working with partners across government to improve the collection of information on disability.

We will continue to work to improve the data collected to ensure that there is transparency in relation to how disabled people's life chances compare to non-disabled people. Additional key indicators of progress will be published online as data becomes available.
