Involvement
Create the best possible communications by involving disabled people
Your communications need to be inclusive, whether they target a general audience or disabled people specifically. To create effective messages that reach all of your target audience, you need to involve disabled people. Do this from the start to get the most benefit:
- Involving disabled people will save on any re-design costs that might occur, for example if you only consider accessibility late in the process.
- A fully accessible communication campaign will highlight your team as a leader in their field, and may even win you awards.
Customer needs first
Involvement is crucial to delivering public services that meet user needs. It will help shape the type of information provided, and will increase its reach among target audiences.
The Disability Equality Duty
Involving disabled people in the development and delivery of effective communication strategies is a major part of the Disability Equality Duty. The duty outlines your responsibility as a government communicator to the one in five people in the UK who are defined as disabled by the Disability Discrimination Act.
What you can do
- Learn how to involve disabled people
